Community Gardens Feed Families and the Hungry

The REAP MORE THAN YOU SOW COMMUNITY GARDENING PROJECT, INC. is a non-profit 501(c)3 initiative in Forsyth and surrounding counties to facilitate the establishment and maintenance of community gardens. There are over 20 gardens in the Reap More network and these gardens yielded over 11,560 pounds of fresh produce of which 8,210 pounds were donated to local food banks and pantries. In addition to feeding the families growing the food and donating to the hungry, community gardening benefits include eating healthier foods, getting exercise, building social capital, and beautifying the community by converting vacated spaces into attractive gardens.

This best practice was submitted by Wallace Williamson who believes community planning should include plans to assist and support neighborhoods, schools, houses of worship, and other groups in the development of sustainable community gardens as a way to build better communities one garden at a time.
